AI Operating Model Consultant
Also called AI Strategy Consultant
An AI Operating Model Consultant redesigns how work, roles and decisions fit around AI capabilities. They help a company turn AI ambition into clear ownership, sensible controls and a plan people can actually follow.
What they do
They map how work is done today and where AI changes it. They decide which tasks stay with people, which move to AI systems, and where a human must check the output. They define roles, decision rights and handoffs, then set the governance around them: who approves, who escalates, who is accountable when something goes wrong. They build value models and portfolio plans to rank use cases. They work with leaders, operations and risk teams, and turn the design into a target operating model and a staged roadmap.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire produces a current-state view of key workflows and an agreed target operating model. Decision rights are written down and accepted by the people who hold them. Workflow controls are defined for the highest-risk uses. A ranked portfolio of use cases and an implementation roadmap give leadership a clear order of work, with owners named for each step and a plan for training and change.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through an operating model they designed and what changed in practice. Good candidates show real workflow maps, name who held decision rights before and after, and explain which controls worked and which were dropped. They talk about adoption and failure, not only structure. Be wary of polished frameworks with no example of a team that actually worked differently afterwards.
Why it is hard to fill
The title is used loosely, so CVs vary widely. Many people have strategy or transformation experience but have never dealt with model risk, human oversight or the way AI output varies. Others are technical and have never redesigned an organisation. The strong candidates sit across both, and they are rarely labelled clearly. Our view is to hire on evidence of delivered change, not on title.
Where to find them
Look in strategy and transformation consulting, operations leadership, and organisational design teams. Good candidates also come from technology leadership, programme management offices and risk or controls functions in regulated sectors. Some have moved from internal transformation roles at larger companies that adopted AI early. AI product teams and enterprise software firms can also produce people who have seen how work changes after deployment.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an AI Operating Model Consultant
- Describe an operating model you designed. What was different about how people worked six months after launch?
Strong answers give concrete changes to roles, handoffs and decisions, and honest detail on what did not stick. Worry if they describe only slides, frameworks or workshops with no evidence of changed behaviour.
- How do you decide which tasks in a workflow stay with people and which AI handles?
Look for a clear logic: error cost, volume, variability, reversibility and accountability. Good answers include human review points and testing. Worry about blanket automation goals or choices based only on what is technically possible.
