AI Procurement Specialist
Also called AI Sourcing Specialist
An AI Procurement Specialist selects external AI suppliers against use case, cost and risk requirements. They help a company buy the right capability, on terms it can enforce, and avoid paying for tools that fail in real use.
What they do
They take a business need and turn it into clear requirements for an AI supplier. They draft vendor questionnaires, run shortlisted offerings through evaluation harnesses on the company's own data and tasks, and work out what usage will really cost at volume. They talk to legal, security, finance and the teams who will use the tool. They coordinate contract terms on data use, performance, change notice and exit. They record expected benefits in a register so value can be checked later. They then write up the decision and the reasoning behind it.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire leaves the company with a repeatable way to evaluate AI suppliers. They deliver at least one well-argued procurement decision backed by test results on realistic work. They produce requirements that sit in the contract and can be enforced. They give finance a cost view based on realistic usage, and they set up a benefit register that owners actually maintain.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a past supplier decision from first brief to signed terms. Strong people show the tests they ran, the requirements they wrote and the option they rejected, with reasons. They explain how usage changes cost. They can say what in the contract would catch a supplier whose quality slipped. Be wary of answers built on demos and brand reputation.
Why it is hard to fill
The title is new and rarely used, so searching by it finds few people. The skills are split across procurement, third-party risk, finance and technical evaluation. Most candidates are strong in one or two and thin in the others. Procurement people may never have run a model test. Technical people may never have negotiated terms. We look for the blend and judge how well it holds up.
Where to find them
Look at technology procurement and category management teams, third-party risk and vendor assurance functions, and finance partners who support technology spend. Some come from technical due diligence or analyst roles that evaluate software. Regulated sectors such as banking and insurance often produce people used to rigorous supplier scrutiny. Larger AI adopters and consultancies are also sources.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an AI Procurement Specialist
- Tell me about a technology supplier you chose. What requirements drove the decision, and what did you reject?
Strong answers name concrete requirements across use case, cost and risk, and explain the trade-offs behind the rejection. They show ownership of the decision. Worry if the story is vague, driven by price alone, or credits others for the analysis.
- How would you test two AI suppliers for a customer support use case before recommending one?
Look for a test set drawn from real tickets, clear pass criteria, scoring of errors by severity, and repeat runs. They should involve the end users. Worry if they rely on vendor demos or published benchmarks alone.
