Learning theory and statistical machine learning

Learning theory and statistical machine learning is the study of why models learn, when they generalise, and how far their predictions can be trusted. AI companies need it to tell real progress from luck, and to know what a method can and cannot promise.

Models now ship faster than anyone can explain them. Founders are finding that benchmark gains do not tell them when a system will fail on new data, or how sure it really is. That pushes demand towards people who can state a hypothesis, test it and show the assumptions underneath. These hires are tricky because the titles overlap and the strongest candidates often sit between statistics, mathematics and computer science. Judge them on how they reason about evidence, not on the papers they list.
