Public-Service AI Product Lead
Also called Government AI Product Manager
A Public-Service AI Product Lead shapes AI-assisted services that public bodies can defend. They turn policy aims into working products, and show that those products are accessible, fair and accountable.
What they do
The lead works out which part of a public service could benefit from AI support, and which should stay with people. They map the current workflow, talk to frontline staff and service users, and write the product plan. They set the checks that sit around each AI-assisted step, including who reviews outputs and how people can challenge a decision. They run accessibility testing with real users, work with legal, policy and data teams on risk, and track how the service performs once it is live. They also explain trade-offs to senior officials in plain language.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers a clear product plan for one live service, agreed with policy, legal and operational owners. They set out the risks and the controls that answer them. They run an early accessibility review and fix the worst barriers. They also put in place an impact evaluation that measures service quality and the fairness of outcomes, so decisions can be explained and defended.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a public-facing service they shaped, from first problem statement to live use. Listen for named users, honest trade-offs and what they chose not to automate. Ask how they would evidence fairness and accessibility. Be wary of people who talk only about model capability, or who treat accountability as paperwork added at the end.
Why it is hard to fill
Few people have shipped digital services inside institutions that answer to the public, and fewer have done it with AI. Titles vary widely, from product manager to service owner to policy adviser. Candidates tend to be strong on either delivery or policy, rarely both. Many good people are in the public sector and need a clear reason to move, so the mission and the mandate matter.
Where to find them
Look at service designers and product managers from government digital teams, civic technology organisations and public sector consultancies. Policy advisers who have moved into delivery are a good source. So are people from public administration, regulators and health or justice services who have worked on workflow change. Some come from vendors that sell to the public sector, though check they have owned outcomes, not only sales.

Interview questions for a Public-Service AI Product Lead
- Tell me about a public-facing service you shaped. What did you change and how did you know it worked?
A strong answer names the users, the problem and the measures used, such as completion, errors and complaints. They separate their contribution from the team's. Worry if results are vague or only about delivery speed.
- How do you decide which steps in a service should use AI and which should stay with a person?
Look for criteria such as impact on the individual, reversibility, error cost and need for discretion. They should mention frontline staff input. Worry about a blanket answer or a default to automate.
