Retail AI Scientist
Also called Retail ML Scientist
A Retail AI Scientist builds models that predict customer behaviour or stock outcomes for specific retail decisions. They matter because they tie model quality to commercial results, and show the work is fair to customers.
What they do
They take a bounded retail decision, such as which products to recommend, how much stock to hold or which customers to contact, and turn it into a modelling problem. They build and test the model, then design controlled experiments to see whether it changes real behaviour. They work with search and recommendation systems, CRM data and analytics tables. They check results across customer groups to spot unfair outcomes. They also explain trade-offs to commercial and finance colleagues in plain terms, and monitor the model once it is live.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers one retail model in live use against a clearly defined decision. It comes with an evaluation that covers business value and fairness, not only accuracy. They set up a repeatable experiment method the team trusts. They also leave behind monitoring that shows whether performance stays stable as customers and ranges change.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a model they shipped and the experiment that proved its value. Strong people explain the decision it supported, the baseline, what went wrong and how they measured harm to any customer group. They talk about commercial impact in plain numbers terms without jargon. Be wary of those who quote only offline accuracy or cannot say what they would stop doing.
Why it is hard to fill
The title is used loosely, so CVs vary widely. Many people have strong retail analytics or strong machine learning, but few have both, plus real experimentation discipline and fairness assessment. Good candidates are often happy in their current commercial team, and some hold titles like data scientist or marketing scientist. We usually search across several backgrounds and test for judgement, not job title.
Where to find them
They come from ecommerce companies, large retailers, marketplaces, marketing science teams and consultancies that serve consumer brands. Typical prior titles are data scientist, applied scientist, commercial analyst, marketing scientist and recommender systems engineer. Some move across from advertising technology or pricing teams. Look for people who have owned a model through to a measured business result.

Interview questions for a Retail AI Scientist
- Describe a retail model you took live. What decision did it support and how did you prove it worked?
A strong answer names a specific decision, a baseline and a controlled test with a clear result. It covers what they measured beyond accuracy. Worry if they only describe offline metrics or cannot say who used the output.
- How would you design an experiment for a new recommendation approach when traffic is limited?
Good answers cover choice of metric, test length trade-offs, variance reduction, guardrail metrics and risk of interference between users. They admit when a test cannot give a clear answer. Worry about vague claims that more data fixes everything.
