Finance AI Transformation Lead

Also called Finance Automation Lead · AI-Enabled Controller

A Finance AI Transformation Lead puts AI agents into the finance function and redesigns the workflows around them. The aim is a faster close, cleaner reconciliations and analysis that an auditor can trace.

What they do

Maps how work actually moves through close, accounts payable and receivable, FP&A and reconciliations. Picks the steps where an AI agent can help and the steps that need a person. Builds or configures those agents with engineering, often using retrieval over policies, contracts and ledgers. Writes the checks that show whether outputs are right, and sets the review points and approvals. Keeps an audit trail for every automated step. Trains finance staff on the new process and handles the pushback. Tracks errors, exceptions and rework, then adjusts the design. The work is often done today by a controller or FP&A manager who took it on.

What a strong hire delivers

Within the first months, a mapped view of the finance workflows and a ranked list of where automation is worth doing. One or two live agent workflows with named owners, clear review steps and a record of what the agent did and why. A simple evaluation set that shows accuracy and exceptions. Finance staff who use the new process and trust where its limits are. Agreement with audit on how the controls work.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through one finance process they changed, from the starting mess to the live result. Listen for how they tested outputs, what went wrong and who signed off. They should explain how an auditor would trace a figure back to its source. Good candidates talk about exceptions and controls before they talk about tools. Be wary of anyone who only describes demos.

Why it is hard to fill

The title barely exists, so searching by it finds few people. The real skill set sits across controllership, FP&A, finance systems and applied AI, and most candidates have only two of those. Finance professionals with hands-on agent experience are rare, and those who have it are often busy inside their current employer under a different title. Technical people lack the credibility to change how a finance team works. Expect a longer search and a flexible brief.

Where to find them

Look at controllers, FP&A leads and finance systems managers who have run automation projects. Also look at audit and advisory technology teams, accounting and tax technology groups, and professional-services firms building internal tools. Some come from finance operations in large enterprises. Others sit inside vendors that sell finance technology to CFOs. Titles often read as finance transformation, automation or systems lead rather than anything with AI in it.

Interview questions for a Finance AI Transformation Lead

  1. Describe a finance process you automated or redesigned. What changed, and how did you know the output was right?

A strong answer names the process, the baseline, the checks used and the results. Look for test sets, sampling and exception handling. Worry if success is described only as time saved, with no accuracy evidence.

  2. How would you decide which parts of the month-end close an AI agent should handle and which stay with people?

Good answers weigh risk, volume, judgement needed and reversibility. They keep people on material estimates and approvals. Worry about anyone who wants to automate everything or nothing, or who ignores materiality.
