Audit AI Specialist
Also called AI Audit Analytics Specialist
An Audit AI Specialist applies AI to audit evidence analysis within professional standards. They give the company analysis that a reviewer can trace, test and defend, instead of output nobody can explain.
What they do
They build and run AI-assisted workflows that work through audit evidence: contracts, ledgers, correspondence and supporting documents. They set up document retrieval, run reconciliations and compare what the model finds with what the source shows. They test where the model misses things or invents them. They write down each step so a senior reviewer can follow it. They flag exceptions that might be material and note what the analysis could not cover. They work inside secure professional systems and respect client confidentiality, licensing terms and the standards the engagement sits under.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers one or two workflows that auditors actually use on live evidence. Each produces reviewed analysis with a clear evidence trail and a plain statement of limitations. They set up a repeatable way to test model output against source documents. They also leave reviewers more confident about what is covered, what is not, and which exceptions need a human judgement.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through an analysis they built and show the evidence trail from conclusion back to source. Ask how they decided the evidence was sufficient. A good candidate describes how they tested the model, where it failed and what they changed. They state limitations without being pushed. Be wary of anyone who talks only about accuracy scores or cannot explain how a reviewer would check their work.
Why it is hard to fill
The title is new and rarely appears on job boards. The work sits between audit practice and applied AI, and few people have done both. Auditors often lack evaluation and retrieval experience. Engineers often lack a feel for evidence sufficiency and professional scepticism. Candidates also tend to be inside firms or regulated teams, so they are not actively looking. We usually have to search by background and test the mix directly.
Where to find them
Look in audit and assurance teams, especially people who moved into data or technology roles. Forensic accounting, tax technology and legal technology teams are good sources too. Some come from legal operations or e-discovery, where document review and defensibility matter. Others come from professional-services technology groups building internal tools. Companies building AI for legal, accounting and audit work also employ them, often in product or applied research roles.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an Audit AI Specialist
- Describe an AI-assisted analysis you built on documentary evidence. How did a reviewer trace each conclusion back to source?
A strong answer covers retrieval setup, citation back to source passages, review steps and how the trail was recorded. Worry if the trail depends on trusting the model, or if the candidate cannot show how a reviewer would check it.
- How do you decide whether evidence is sufficient when AI has done the first pass?
Good answers separate coverage from accuracy, mention sampling, corroboration and professional scepticism, and say when a human must examine the underlying documents. Worry about answers that treat model confidence as sufficiency.
