AI Portfolio Analytics Scientist
Also called Portfolio ML Scientist
An AI Portfolio Analytics Scientist models portfolio risk and the tradeoffs behind investment decisions. They give the company reliable risk estimates and scenario analysis, so decisions stay inside the limits it has set.
What they do
They build models that explain where portfolio risk comes from and how it shifts when positions, markets or constraints change. They decompose risk by factor, asset and strategy. They run scenario and stress analysis, then set out the tradeoffs in plain terms for portfolio managers and researchers. They use optimisation to test how decisions behave under limits on exposure, concentration and liquidity. They backtest ideas against market data and check whether the results survive realistic assumptions. They also validate their own models and document what each one can and cannot be trusted to say.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers a working risk decomposition the investment team trusts and uses. They set up scenario analysis that answers real questions about the book. They show how well risk estimates held up against what happened. They make constraint checks clear and repeatable. They leave behind documented models with known limits, so others can challenge and extend them.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a portfolio risk model they built, and where it failed. Strong people explain the assumptions, the data problems and how they validated the result. They separate a backtest that looks good from one that deserves belief. Ask them to explain a tradeoff to a non-specialist. Be wary of anyone who talks only about methods and never about decisions.
Why it is hard to fill
The title varies widely, so searching by it misses most good people. The skill sits between quantitative finance, statistics and optimisation, and few people are strong in all three. Many candidates are deep in one area, such as pure research or pure risk reporting, and have not tied models to live portfolio decisions. Those who have are usually settled in their current seats.
Where to find them
Look in quantitative research, risk modelling and portfolio construction teams at asset managers, hedge funds and banks. Trading systems groups and investment research teams also produce good candidates. Many come from statistics, operations research or applied mathematics before moving into finance. Some come from model validation functions, which gives them a sceptical eye for how models break.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an AI Portfolio Analytics Scientist
- Describe a portfolio risk model you built. How did you check that its estimates were accurate?
Covers the model's purpose, data, assumptions and a concrete validation method such as out-of-sample comparison against realised outcomes. Should name a limitation they found. Worry if accuracy was never measured or they only cite in-sample fit.
- How would you decompose the risk of a portfolio that has just changed sharply in composition?
Discusses factor and asset-level attribution, unstable covariance estimates, and the need to rebuild or adjust inputs after the change. Worry if they assume historical relationships still hold without testing.
