International Frontier AI Verification Inspector
Also called Frontier AI Treaty Inspector · International AI Verification Inspector · AI Treaty Verification Specialist
An International Frontier AI Verification Inspector would assess compliance with an international agreement on advanced AI. The role depends on how AI develops and on whether states authorise a verification regime. It is not a role anyone is hiring for now.
What they do
If a legitimate cross-border verification regime were established, the inspector would plan and carry out authorised inspections of organisations developing frontier systems. They would agree the scope with the inspected party, request records and access, and check what is found against the terms of the agreement. They would document each step so the evidence stands up later. They would write findings in neutral language, flag gaps in coverage, and brief the body that commissioned the inspection. They would also work with colleagues on emergency coordination if a serious incident occurred.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire would help turn a broad agreement into inspection procedures that can actually be followed. They would produce a first set of clear evidence-handling rules and a checklist of what the agreement lets them verify. They would run a trial inspection and report what it could and could not confirm. They would also build working relationships with technical and legal colleagues.
How you can tell they are good
Ask the candidate to walk through an inspection they ran or designed, and how they kept evidence trustworthy. Ask what they would do if access was limited or the agreement was vague. A strong candidate separates what was verified from what was assumed, stays neutral under pressure, and explains technical findings plainly. Be wary of anyone who overstates what an inspection can prove.
Why it is hard to fill
Almost nobody would have done this work, because the institutions would not yet exist. The recruiter's view is that you would need a rare mix: inspection discipline, technical understanding of advanced AI systems and hardware, and diplomatic judgement. Titles would vary and none would map neatly. Candidates would also need to be acceptable to several governments, which narrows the pool further.
Where to find them
Today the closest people sit in arms-control and nuclear safeguards inspection, chemical and biological weapons verification, and export control. Others come from hardware security and supply chain assurance, technical audit, AI governance and assurance teams, and emergency response coordination. Employers include intergovernmental bodies, national regulators, research institutes, and the safety and policy teams of AI developers.
Interview questions for an International Frontier AI Verification Inspector
- Tell us about an inspection or audit you led where access was restricted. What did you do?
A strong answer describes the constraints, how they negotiated access, what they recorded, and how they stated the limits of their findings. Worry if they hid the gaps or treated limited access as a full pass.
- How would you keep a chain of evidence credible when the inspected party is technically more expert than you?
Good answers cover independent checks, documented procedures, second-person review, and asking specialists for support without losing control. Worry about blind trust in the inspected party's explanations or vague talk about transparency.

- What organisations would need to decide
- States or other legitimate actors authorise workable international assurance mechanisms.
