Global AI Incident Coordination Officer

Also called Global Frontier Incident Coordinator

A Global AI Incident Coordination Officer would coordinate cross-border response to serious frontier AI incidents. Whether the role exists depends on how AI develops and on whether states authorise international assurance bodies. No company is hiring for it now.

What they do

If international assurance institutions emerged, this person would run the response when a consequential frontier incident crossed borders. They would establish what is known, who holds the relevant information and who has authority to act. They would convene national agencies, developers and technical assessors, and keep a clear record of decisions. They would draft and maintain a multilateral coordination and recovery plan, test it through exercises, and decide what can be shared, with whom and under what conditions. After an incident they would run the review and track agreed fixes.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire would deliver a response plan that named roles, escalation routes and decision rights across participating parties. They would run at least one exercise and record what failed. They would agree information-sharing rules that legal and technical teams could both live with, and leave a working contact network that does not depend on one person's memory.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through a real incident they coordinated across organisations or jurisdictions. Listen for who they pulled in, what they decided with partial facts, and what they would change. Give them a short frontier scenario and ask for the first six hours. Strong candidates stay calm, ask about authority and evidence, and explain their sharing choices. Be wary of vague talk about collaboration.

Why it is hard to fill

If this happened, the people would be scarce because the role mixes emergency coordination, international process and enough technical understanding of frontier systems to judge claims. Few people have all three. Titles would differ by institution and legal mandate, so searches by title would miss good candidates. Most would come from adjacent fields and need to be assessed on how they handled crises, not on their job names.

Where to find them

Today, the closest people work in international governance, inspection and verification, civil protection and emergency coordination, and assurance or audit. Look at staff of intergovernmental bodies, national incident response and resilience agencies, regulators of safety-critical industries, and cyber incident response teams. Others come from frontier AI safety and policy teams, where scenario analysis and risk management are already part of the job.

Interview questions for a Global AI Incident Coordination Officer

  1. Describe an incident you coordinated across several organisations or countries. What was your authority, and what did you decide?

A strong answer is specific about the mandate, the parties and the decisions made with incomplete information. It names mistakes and what changed afterwards. Worry if they describe only meetings, claim sole credit, or cannot say what authority they had.

  2. A frontier model incident affects users in several countries and the developer is reluctant to share details. What do you do first?

Good answers establish facts, identify who has authority, and use agreed sharing rules before pressure. They separate urgent needs from nice-to-have detail. Worry about answers that jump to blame, publicity or assuming powers the mandate may not grant.

Depends on a scenario

International frontier assurance institutions

What AI would need to do
Frontier-system risks create incentives for cross-border verification and coordination.
What organisations would need to decide
States or other legitimate actors authorise workable international assurance mechanisms.
What would rule it out
No agreement, no verification feasibility or no enforcement capacity.

We give no date. The role becomes real if both conditions hold.
