AI Technical Product Manager

Also called AI Platform Product Manager

An AI Technical Product Manager decides what an AI platform should do and how developers use it. They turn builder needs into clear requirements and a release plan, so the platform gets adopted and trusted.

What they do

They define the capabilities and interfaces that AI builders rely on, such as APIs, evaluation tooling and developer workflows. Day to day they talk to developers, read usage data, write technical requirements and prototype ideas with engineers. They review evaluation results to judge whether a capability is good enough to ship. They decide what goes in a release, what waits and what gets cut. They also keep documentation, deprecation plans and communication clear, so builders know what is changing and why.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire gives the team a clear picture of who builds on the platform and what stops them. They produce written technical requirements engineers can build from without constant clarification. They set out a release plan with sensible sequencing and trade-offs. They put developer outcome measures and evaluation dashboards in place, so progress and adoption can be seen rather than guessed.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through a platform or API they shaped. Listen for the user problem, the interface decisions, what they rejected and what happened after release. Ask them to read an evaluation result and say whether to ship. Strong candidates use real developer evidence, explain trade-offs plainly and can discuss technical detail without hiding behind jargon.

Why it is hard to fill

The title is used loosely, so a CV reading AI Product Manager can mean very different things. Many strong product managers lack API design depth. Many technical people have never owned a roadmap or worked with developers as customers. The people who do both are few, and they are usually settled in good roles. We screen for shipped platform decisions, not title alone.

Where to find them

Look at product managers working on developer platforms, APIs and infrastructure products. Applied researchers who moved towards product are another source, as are technical business analysts who have worked close to engineering. They tend to sit in AI platform companies, developer tools businesses, model providers and larger software firms building internal AI platforms. Solutions engineers with strong product instincts are worth a look too.

Indicative pay

Interview questions for an AI Technical Product Manager

  1. Tell me about an API or platform capability you defined. What problem did it solve for developers?

A strong answer names the developer problem, the interface choices and the evidence behind them. It then covers adoption afterwards. Worry if they describe only features, cannot explain design trade-offs or claim credit for work the engineers owned.

  2. How have you used user research with technical users to change a roadmap?

Look for specific methods, such as interviews, support data or usage analytics, and a clear decision that changed. Worry if research only confirmed existing plans, or if they rely on opinions from a few loud customers.
