Autonomous Close Manager

Also called Agentic Close Lead

An Autonomous Close Manager would supervise AI agents that run most of the month-end close and own the exceptions and sign-off. The role depends on how AI develops, and no one is hiring for it today.

What they do

If agents ran most of the close, this person would supervise them. They would set what each agent may post, reconcile or accrue, and where it must stop and ask. Each close, they would review the exceptions the agents raise, decide which are real and which are noise, and resolve the real ones with the teams involved. They would sample agent work, trace errors to their cause and adjust the limits. They would sign off the close, keep the evidence trail an auditor could follow, and report on how far the agents can be trusted.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire would map the close and agree which steps agents can run and which stay with people. They would set written limits on agent authority and a clear route for exceptions. They would produce a close that finishes with an evidence trail an auditor accepts, and a short, honest view of where agent reliability still falls short.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through a close they ran and show where they would hand work to an agent and where they would not. Good candidates talk about materiality, sampling and what evidence they would need before trusting an output. Ask how they would detect a quiet, plausible error. Be wary of anyone who treats sign-off as a formality.

Why it is hard to fill

If this role appeared, people would be scarce because it joins two uncommon things: real controller judgement and hands-on experience supervising automated agents. Titles would vary, and few candidates would have done both. Finance people often have little exposure to agent work. Automation people often lack the accounting depth to know what a wrong answer looks like. Recruiters would need to assess both sides.

Where to find them

Today the best candidates would come from controllership, financial reporting and accounting operations, especially those who have run close automation or shared service teams. Others would come from pricing, infrastructure finance and finance systems. Some would be internal audit or risk people who understand control design. Enterprises with large, repeatable closes would be the likeliest source.

Interview questions for an Autonomous Close Manager

  1. Describe a close you ran. Which steps would you hand to an agent first, and which would you keep?

A strong answer picks repeatable, well-evidenced steps such as reconciliations and keeps judgemental areas like estimates and unusual items. They explain why. Worry if they would automate everything or nothing, or cannot name specific steps.

  2. How would you decide the limits of what an agent may post without human approval?

Look for reasoning on materiality, reversibility, account type and past error rates, with limits that tighten or loosen on evidence. Worry about a single blanket threshold or limits set by convenience.

Job description you can post

We are building a finance function where AI agents run much of the month-end close. We need someone to supervise those agents, own the exceptions and sign off the close. You would set the limits agents work within and make sure our numbers can be trusted and audited.

What you will do

  • Supervise AI agents performing close tasks such as reconciliations, accruals and journals
  • Define and maintain the limits of agent authority and escalation rules
  • Review and resolve exceptions raised by agents and by the finance team
  • Sample agent output, trace errors to their cause and correct the process
  • Sign off the close and maintain a clear evidence trail
  • Work with auditors, systems and accounting teams on controls
  • Report on agent reliability and where human review is still needed

What you will bring

  • Demonstrated experience running a month-end close to a deadline
  • Clear examples of designing or improving financial controls
  • Sound judgement on materiality and when to escalate
  • Experience working with automation or agents in finance processes
  • Ability to explain accounting decisions to auditors and non-finance colleagues
  • Evidence of diagnosing the root cause of errors, not just correcting them

Nice to have

  • Experience in infrastructure or compute finance
  • Background in internal audit or risk
  • Familiarity with agent frameworks and their logging

Depends on a scenario

Broad reliable autonomous delegation

What AI would need to do
Systems complete diverse consequential tasks with sustained reliability beyond existing narrow deployments.
What organisations would need to decide
Organisations explicitly delegate bounded authority and establish enforceable accountability.
What would rule it out
Persistent reliability limits or lack of useful cost advantage prevents broad delegation.

We give no date. The role becomes real if both conditions hold.
