AI Tax Specialist

Also called Digital Services / Compute Tax Lead

An AI Tax Specialist manages the tax side of building and selling AI: R&D credits, cross-border compute and model licensing, and how AI services are taxed. They protect margin and keep the company out of avoidable disputes.

What they do

They map where compute is bought, where models are trained and where customers use the product, then work out the tax effect of each flow. They prepare R&D credit claims by separating qualifying research from routine engineering. They review model licensing and intercompany agreements for withholding and transfer pricing issues. They advise on how usage-based AI services are classified for indirect tax. They work with finance, legal and engineering, and they keep records that stand up when a tax authority asks questions.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire gives the company a clear map of its tax exposure across compute, licensing and AI revenue. They put an evidence process in place for R&D credits, so engineers record qualifying work as it happens. They flag the two or three decisions that need action now, and they agree a sensible way of working with finance and legal.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through a real structure they handled involving cross-border services, intellectual property or R&D claims. Listen for specifics: what they decided, what they gave up, what the authority challenged. Give a scenario about a model trained in one country and sold in several. Strong people ask about facts first, then reason clearly and say what they do not know.

Why it is hard to fill

The work sits between international tax, transfer pricing, R&D credits and technical understanding of compute. Few people have all four. Many who do the work hold titles such as tax manager or transfer pricing lead, so job titles tell you little. Demand is high and the pool is small. Candidates who understand how training and inference actually run are rarer still.

Where to find them

Look in the tax practices of large advisory firms, especially international tax, transfer pricing and R&D incentives teams. Also look in tax functions at multinationals with heavy cloud or infrastructure spend, and at frontier labs. Some come from infrastructure finance or pricing, having picked up tax through structuring work. Digital services tax experience is a useful signal.

Indicative pay

Interview questions for an AI Tax Specialist

  1. Tell us about a cross-border tax issue you handled involving services or intellectual property. What did you decide and why?

A strong answer names the facts, the options considered and the trade-offs, and says what happened afterwards. Worry if they stay at the level of general principles, claim sole credit for team work, or cannot explain why they chose one route.

  2. How would you separate qualifying R&D from ordinary engineering in a company building and fine-tuning models?

They should talk about uncertainty, experimentation and evidence, and about working with engineers to capture records early. Worry if they treat all engineering time as qualifying, or if they have no plan for documentation that survives review.
