Advanced-AI Economic Transition Architect
Also called AGI Economic Transition Architect
An Advanced-AI Economic Transition Architect would design institutionally authorised responses if AI reshapes valuable human work. Whether the role exists depends on how AI develops, and on institutions funding it.
What they do
The work would start with evidence. They would map how AI is changing task mixes in affected sectors and where the effects fall on workers and communities. They would then draft transition options, such as retraining routes, income support designs or changes to how work is organised, and test each against distributional outcomes. They would set up ways for workers and communities to take part, and work with public bodies, employers and international partners. Much of the day would go on writing analysis that decision makers can act on, and on stating plainly where the evidence is weak.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire would produce a clear picture of where change is landing and who is affected. They would put a short list of costed, workable transition options in front of the people who can authorise them. They would also establish how worker participation and distributional monitoring would run, and set a standard for evidence quality that others can check.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a past policy or programme they shaped, and what happened to the people it was meant to help. Strong candidates separate what they knew from what they assumed. They can explain a trade-off between groups without hiding it. Be wary of people who offer one grand solution, or who treat worker voice as a consultation exercise.
Why it is hard to fill
If this role emerged, nobody would hold the title. The people would sit across economics, social policy, worker representation and public administration, and few have worked near frontier AI. Fewer still combine technical scenario thinking with institutional credibility. Candidates with the right mix would be scarce, and most would be in senior posts they have little reason to leave.
Where to find them
Today the closest people work in labour economics, social policy, trade unions and worker representative bodies, and public administration. Some sit in research institutes, government departments, international organisations and policy teams at technology companies. Look for those who have designed or evaluated transition programmes, such as support for workers in declining industries, and who can read AI capability evidence.
Interview questions for an Advanced-AI Economic Transition Architect
- Describe a transition or support programme you helped design. Who gained, who lost, and how did you know?
A strong answer names specific groups and the evidence used to judge outcomes. It admits who was missed. Worry if they cite only headline results or cannot say how success was measured.
- How would you decide whether AI is really changing the task mix in a sector, rather than just being talked about?
Good answers use several evidence sources, such as task-level data, employer accounts and worker testimony. They name limits and what would change their mind. Worry about reliance on one source or on hype.
4 more questions, with what a strong answer covers, are in the Role Kit.
