RL Environment Engineer
Also called RL Gym Engineer · Environment Builder
An RL Environment Engineer builds the simulated worlds and tasks in which models learn through reinforcement learning. The quality of those environments sets what a model can actually learn, so the work shapes the quality of the final system.
What they do
Designs and builds simulated environments and tasks for reinforcement learning. Writes the task logic, the state and action interfaces, and the reward signals that tell a model whether it succeeded. Packages environments in containers so they run reliably at scale. Tests them for loopholes, because models will find any shortcut left open. Watches training runs, spots where a model exploits a flaw, and fixes it. Works with researchers to decide what to build next, and tunes difficulty so tasks teach something. Keeps environments documented, versioned and easy for others to reuse.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire ships a small set of working environments that researchers use in real training runs. Rewards are checked and hard to game. Environments run reliably in containers and can be reused by others. They also leave behind a clear way to build and test new tasks, so the team can add more without starting again each time.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through an environment they built. Listen for how they defined success, how the reward could be gamed, and what they changed after seeing a model exploit it. Ask how they would test an environment before training begins. Strong people talk about failure cases and measurement. Weak ones only describe the build.
Why it is hard to fill
The title is new and nobody has ten years of doing it. Names vary, and the same work sits under gym engineer, environment builder or simulation engineer. The skills come from mixed backgrounds: backend engineering, simulation, test engineering, reward design. Demand from frontier labs is intense, so the few proven people are rarely on the market. Most good hires are retooled, not found ready made.
Where to find them
Look first at strong backend and infrastructure engineers who like building systems with clear rules. Simulation and game engineers are a close second, as are test and quality engineers who think adversarially about how things break. Some come from research engineering or applied statistics. They work at frontier labs, data vendors, robotics teams and companies building agents or evaluation tooling.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an RL Environment Engineer
- Describe an environment or simulation you built. What was the task, and how did you decide what counted as success?
Strong answers define success precisely, explain the reward design and its trade-offs, and name what they measured. Worry if they describe only the tooling, or cannot say how they knew the environment taught the right behaviour.
- Tell me about a time a model or user found a shortcut in something you built. What did you do?
Look for a specific example, how they detected it, and how they fixed the cause rather than the symptom. Good candidates then added checks. Worry if they say it never happened, or blame the model.

Job description you can post
We train models with reinforcement learning, and the environments they learn in decide how good they become. We are looking for an engineer to design, build and maintain those environments and tasks, working closely with researchers. You will own the work from first spec to reliable use in training.
What you will do
- Design and build simulated environments and tasks for reinforcement learning
- Define reward signals and success checks that are hard to exploit
- Package environments so they run reliably and in parallel at scale
- Test environments for loopholes and fix them before and during training
- Analyse training runs to find where models exploit or stall
- Work with researchers to prioritise and specify new tasks
- Document and version environments so others can reuse them
What you will bring
- Built and shipped a simulation, environment or similar system, which you can walk us through
- Strong software engineering, ideally in Python and backend systems
- Experience designing rewards, scoring or evaluation logic
- Experience with containers and running workloads reliably at scale
- A habit of testing adversarially and thinking about how things break
- Clear written communication and willingness to work with researchers
Nice to have
- Experience with reinforcement learning training runs
- Background in simulation, games or robotics
- Experience with statistics or experimental design
- Familiarity with agent frameworks
