Warehouse AI Systems Specialist
Also called Warehouse AI Engineer
A Warehouse AI Systems Specialist connects models and automation to the way a warehouse actually runs. They raise throughput and accuracy without putting workers at risk or breaking floor processes.
What they do
The work sits between data science and the warehouse floor. The specialist maps how goods, people and equipment move, then decides where a model or piece of automation can help. They build forecasts for inbound volume and labour demand, and use optimisation to set task assignment, slotting or routing. They connect outputs to warehouse management and control systems through data pipelines. They set limits on what automation may decide alone. They run field tests on site, watch what workers do, and adjust the design when reality differs from the model.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers a mapped view of the warehouse workflow and one integrated use case running live. That could be forecast-driven labour planning or optimised task routing. It comes with a field test, a clear baseline and a read-out on throughput, accuracy and safety. The company also gets documented limits for the automation and floor staff who trust it.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a system they put into a live operation. Strong people describe the process first, then the model. They explain which constraints they encoded, what they left to humans, and how they tested on site. Ask what went wrong in the field. Weak candidates talk only about model accuracy and have no story about workers or safety.
Why it is hard to fill
The title is new, so the people doing it carry other labels. Most come from analytics or operations research and have never touched a live floor. Others know warehouses well but cannot build models. Hiring managers want both, plus a safety mindset. That mix is rare, and the best candidates are usually settled in operations teams that value them.
Where to find them
Look in supply-chain analytics, operations research and transport engineering. Good candidates often hold titles such as optimisation analyst, logistics data scientist, operations engineer or automation engineer. They come from retailers, third-party logistics providers, parcel networks, warehouse automation firms and logistics software companies. Some have moved from planning teams into hands-on deployment work.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for a Warehouse AI Systems Specialist
- Describe a model or optimisation you took into a live warehouse or similar operation. What changed on the floor?
A strong answer names the process, the people affected and measured results. Look for honest detail on adoption problems. Worry if the work stayed in a notebook or they cannot say what changed for workers.
- How would you decide which warehouse decisions automation may make alone and which need a person?
Good answers set bounds by risk, reversibility and confidence, with escalation paths and override options. Safety comes up unprompted. Worry about answers that aim for full automation or ignore floor staff.
