Automated AI Research Assurance Lead

Also called AI R&D Assurance Lead · Automated Alignment Research Manager · AI Research Agent Supervisor

An Automated AI Research Assurance Lead would challenge the evidence coming out of heavily automated AI development. The role depends on how AI develops, and matters only if automated research improves systems at real speed.

What they do

The person would sit outside the research push and test what it claims. They would read the evidence from automated experiments and ask what was assumed, what was checked and by whom. They would run an independent review before a capability change moves forward. They would write assessments of what a change could do and what it could break. They would work with release engineers and control teams on where change boundaries sit. They would also watch for incentives that reward shipping over checking, and say so plainly to leadership.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire would set up an independent review process that research teams accept and use. They would produce the first capability-change assessments, with clear findings on unverified assumptions. They would agree where review can pause a release. They would give leadership a short, honest list of where incentives push towards unsafe speed, and what to change.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through a review where they overturned a confident claim. Listen for how they found the weak assumption and how they dealt with pressure to release. Ask them to design review for a system that runs experiments faster than people can read them. Strong candidates separate what was verified from what was assumed, and admit what current tools cannot yet check.

Why it is hard to fill

If this scenario arrived, the pool would be tiny and the titles would not match. The work needs senior research judgement, release discipline and governance sense in one person. Most candidates would have two of the three. Few have reviewed automated research at scale, because it barely exists. Frontier labs would compete for the same handful, and independence from the research team would be hard to preserve.

Where to find them

Today they would come from release engineering at large technical organisations, control evaluation teams, and frontier governance or assurance groups. Some would come from distributed systems engineering, where change control and failure analysis are second nature. Others would come from safety evaluation and scenario analysis work. Frontier labs and the research groups that audit them are the likeliest sources.

Interview questions for an Automated AI Research Assurance Lead

  1. Tell me about a time you challenged a result everyone wanted to accept. What did you find and what happened?

Look for a specific case, a clear method for finding the weak assumption, and honesty about the cost. Strong answers show evidence changing minds. Worry if they only describe winning arguments or never stood against a senior view.

  2. How would you decide whether an automated experiment's result can be trusted without reading every step?

Strong answers cover sampling, independent replication, checks on the evaluation itself and spotting gaming of metrics. They admit limits. Worry about blind trust in automated outputs or a plan that needs humans to read everything.

Job description you can post

We are building independent review into our AI development programme as more of our research becomes automated. We need a lead who can test the evidence behind capability changes, say clearly what has and has not been verified, and help us decide what is safe to release.

What you will do

  • Run independent review of evidence from automated research programmes
  • Write capability-change assessments for proposed releases
  • Identify unverified assumptions and report them to leadership
  • Define change boundaries and the conditions for pausing a release
  • Work with research, engineering and governance teams on review design
  • Flag incentives that favour speed over verification

What you will bring

  • Demonstrated work reviewing or gating high-stakes technical releases
  • Experience evaluating AI systems for control or safety risks
  • Sound research judgement, shown through past critiques or reviews
  • Working knowledge of distributed systems and agent tooling
  • Clear written assessments that non-specialists can act on
  • Evidence of holding an independent position under pressure

Nice to have

  • Experience in frontier AI governance or assurance
  • Scenario analysis work on advanced AI
  • Experience building evaluation infrastructure

Depends on a scenario

Rapid automated AI research and recursive change

What AI would need to do
Automated AI research repeatedly improves systems at consequential speed and scale.
What organisations would need to decide
Developers retain controlled release, independent review and enforceable change boundaries.
What would rule it out
Compute, experiment, evaluation or integration bottlenecks prevent rapid compounding gains.

We give no date. The role becomes real if both conditions hold.

How we wrote this

Role definitions are our own editorial work, checked against occupational classifications, standards, research and employer pages. Titles vary by company, and this is a description of the work, not a job advert. Scenario roles describe responsibilities that depend on stated conditions; they are not forecasts.
