Agent Market Mechanism Researcher
Also called Agent Economy Researcher
This person designs and tests the rules that govern how AI agents trade, bid and share resources in bounded simulated markets. It matters because badly set incentives get exploited by agents long before they reach customers.
What they do
They build simulated markets where several agents compete or cooperate over limited resources such as compute, tasks or attention. They write down the rules: who can bid, how allocations are made, what gets rewarded. Then they run the agents against those rules and read the traces to see what actually happened. They look for collusion, free riding and loopholes, then change the mechanism and test again. They state their assumptions plainly, so others know where the results hold and where they stop. Much of the week goes on trace analysis and writing up findings.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers a working simulated market with clear rules and a written set of assumptions. They produce a study of how well the mechanism allocates resources and where agents can game it. They hand over a short list of fixes, tested and ranked. The team ends up with a repeatable way to check incentive designs before shipping them.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a mechanism they designed and how agents broke it. A strong candidate names the assumptions, shows the traces, and explains what they changed and why. They separate what they measured from what they guessed. Be wary of anyone who talks only in theory, or who claims a design is exploit proof without stating its limits.
Why it is hard to fill
Almost nobody carries this title. The work sits inside research engineer, applied scientist or agent evaluation roles, so job titles tell you little. The skill mix is unusual: game theory depth plus the habit of running real agents and reading messy traces. Economists rarely build simulators. Engineers rarely know mechanism design. People with both are few and usually busy.
Where to find them
Look at multi-agent reinforcement learning researchers, game theorists who write code, and distributed systems engineers who moved towards agent coordination. Agent evaluation teams are another source. They sit in frontier labs, academic groups working on algorithmic game theory, agent infrastructure start-ups and economics-minded research teams. Many do the work without the title.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an Agent Market Mechanism Researcher
- Describe a mechanism you designed for interacting agents. What did you want it to achieve, and how did you check it?
A strong answer names the goal, the rules, the assumptions and the measures used, such as efficiency and resistance to exploits. Worry if they describe only the idea and never how they tested it against real agent behaviour.
- Tell me about a time agents found a loophole in your design. What did the traces show?
Look for a specific story: how they spotted it in the traces, what the agents did, and how they fixed it. Worry about vague claims, or a story where the loophole was found by someone else.
4 more questions, with what a strong answer covers, are in the Role Kit.
Job description you can post
We are building systems where many AI agents interact, trade and compete over limited resources. We need a researcher to design the rules of those markets and test whether they hold up when agents behave strategically. You will turn incentive questions into clear, tested answers.
What you will do
- Design allocation and incentive mechanisms for bounded simulated agent markets
- Build and run multi-agent simulations to test those mechanisms
- Analyse agent traces to find exploits, collusion and unintended behaviour
- Measure efficiency and exploit resistance under clearly stated assumptions
- Write up findings so engineers and leaders can act on them
- Work with the engineers who build our agent coordination protocols
What you will bring
- Demonstrated mechanism design or game theory work applied to software agents
- Experience building or running multi-agent simulations
- Strong trace analysis skills, with examples of findings you acted on
- Background in distributed systems, reinforcement learning or agent evaluation
- Clear writing that states assumptions and limits
- Ability to code your own experiments
Nice to have
- Experience with agent orchestration or coordination protocols
- Published or shared research on strategic agent behaviour
- Experience evaluating models in adversarial settings
