Manufacturing AI Process Specialist
Also called Industrial AI Process Analyst
A Manufacturing AI Process Specialist introduces bounded AI assistance into production workflows and proves it works. They make quality and throughput better in ways operators accept and the plant can sustain.
What they do
They start with a real production problem, such as scrap, rework, unplanned stops or slow changeovers. They look at inspection data, machine telemetry and the way operators actually work. Then they pick a narrow place where AI can help, such as flagging likely defects or suggesting a setting. They build or adapt the model with data scientists, test it in simulation, and design a controlled trial on the line. They write the process change, train the operators, and watch the results. They also decide when to switch a tool off.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers one or two controlled process changes that have been trialled on a live line with clear before and after measures. They leave behind a documented method for testing AI assistance safely, a shared view of quality-adjusted throughput, and operators who can say whether the tool helps them. They also leave a short list of the next candidate problems, ranked by value and risk.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a process change they ran from first idea to measured result. Listen for how they defined the baseline, limited the risk, handled operator concerns and judged the outcome. Strong candidates talk about confounders, shift effects and failure cases without prompting. They can explain a model in plain terms to a line supervisor. Be wary of anyone who talks only about model accuracy.
Why it is hard to fill
Almost nobody carries this title yet. The work sits inside process engineering, quality, maintenance or controls jobs, and sometimes inside data science teams that have spent time on a shop floor. Candidates tend to be strong on one side only: plant credibility or modelling skill. Those with both are rare, and they are rarely looking, because their current employers value them highly. Job titles will not help you search.
Where to find them
Look at process, industrial, quality and reliability engineers who have worked with data science teams. Controls and automation engineers who moved into analytics are another source. So are machine learning engineers who spent time embedded in a plant. They tend to sit in manufacturers, industrial automation suppliers, inspection and machine vision companies, and operations research or simulation consultancies.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for a Manufacturing AI Process Specialist
- Tell us about a process change you trialled on a live production line. How did you design the trial and measure the result?
Strong answers cover a clear baseline, a limited scope, a control group or comparison period, and a measure that balances quality and throughput. Worry if they only quote model metrics or cannot explain how they separated the change from normal variation.
- An inspection model flags more defects than operators agree with. What do you do?
They should investigate both sides: sample the disputed items, check labelling and lighting or sensor drift, and talk to operators. A good answer treats operator disagreement as information. Worry if they simply defend the model or override the people.

Job description you can post
We make products at scale and want to use AI where it clearly helps our production teams. We are hiring someone to find the right problems, run careful trials and turn what works into everyday practice on the line. You will work closely with operators, engineers and data scientists.
What you will do
- Identify production quality, equipment and process problems where bounded AI assistance could help
- Work with data scientists to shape models using inspection, telemetry and process data
- Test proposed changes in simulation before they reach the line
- Design and run controlled trials with clear baselines and measures
- Write and roll out updated process instructions and operator training
- Track quality-adjusted throughput and operator acceptance, and report honestly on results
- Define limits, monitoring and fallbacks for any AI assistance in use
What you will bring
- Demonstrated process changes delivered on a live production line, with measured results
- Working knowledge of time-series analysis and experimental design in a plant setting
- Experience with inspection, vision or machine telemetry data
- Ability to build trust with operators and supervisors and act on their feedback
- Clear written and spoken communication of technical findings to non-specialists
- Sound judgement about when not to use AI
Nice to have
- Experience with simulation, digital twins or optimisation methods
- Background in quality, maintenance or controls engineering
- Hands-on work with computer vision on inspection systems
