AI Election Integrity Specialist
Also called Synthetic Media Election Analyst
An AI Election Integrity Specialist assesses how synthetic media and impersonation could disrupt civic processes, and sets up verified, authorised ways to respond. They protect the company's reputation and the legitimate speech of its users.
What they do
They map where AI-generated content, cloned voices and impersonated officials could cause harm around voting and civic information. They red team products and policies to see how they could be misused. They run verification on suspect material, using provenance validators and media forensics, and record what is confirmed and what is not. They write response procedures that name who may act, on what evidence, and how fast. They brief legal, policy, product and communications teams in plain language. Much of this work already sits inside trust and safety or policy jobs.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire delivers a clear risk assessment of how the product could be used to deceive voters or impersonate officials. They set up a verification routine the team can actually run under pressure. They agree authorised response procedures with legal and leadership, including who signs off. They also leave behind a record of decisions that shows legitimate expression was protected.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a real or hypothetical incident, from first signal to final decision. Good candidates separate what is verified from what is suspected, and say what they would not act on. They can explain what provenance data proves and where it fails. They describe the cost of wrongly removing real speech as clearly as the cost of missing a fake. Be wary of anyone who treats detection tools as final answers.
Why it is hard to fill
Almost nobody holds this title yet. The work is usually done by someone with a different job label, so job boards turn up little. The skills are split across forensics, journalism, trust and safety and social research, and few people have all of them. Many candidates are strong on analysis but have never written a response procedure that others must follow. Others know operations but not synthetic media.
Where to find them
Look at digital forensics analysts, investigative and verification journalists, trust and safety leads and social researchers who study disinformation. Strong candidates also come from civic technology groups, election-focused nonprofits, platform policy teams and research groups at model providers. Check for people who have handled live incidents, not only written reports about them. Those who have worked with provenance standards are especially worth a call.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an AI Election Integrity Specialist
- Describe a time you verified a piece of media under time pressure. What did you check, and what did you decide not to claim?
Strong answers show a clear method, named evidence types and honest limits on confidence. They separate fact from inference. Worry if they rely on a single tool, overstate certainty, or cannot say what they left unconfirmed.
- What can content provenance data tell you, and what can it not tell you?
Good answers explain that provenance shows origin and edit history when present, but missing data is not proof of fakery. They mention stripping, uneven adoption and spoofing. Worry if they treat it as a complete answer.
