AI Financial Model Validator

Also called AI Model Risk Validator

An AI Financial Model Validator independently challenges the financial AI models a bank or payments company relies on. They find weaknesses before customers, regulators or losses do, so the company can trust what it ships.

What they do

The validator reviews financial AI models built by other teams and tries to break them. They read the model documentation, check the data and assumptions, and rebuild key results independently. They test performance across customer groups, stressed conditions and edge cases. They look at how the model behaves in live case-management and payment workflows, not only in a notebook. They check privacy handling and whether the controls around the model actually work. They write up what they find, rank the weaknesses by materiality, agree fixes with model owners and retest once the fixes are in. They stay independent throughout, which sometimes means saying no to a senior colleague.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire gives the company a validation approach that model owners and risk leads both accept. They complete validation reports on live models, each with clear limitations and a remediation plan. They surface material weaknesses that were not already known, and they retest the fixes themselves. Teams start asking for challenge earlier, before a model reaches approval, which cuts rework and awkward conversations with regulators.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through a validation they carried out. A strong candidate explains what they chose to test and why, what they rebuilt independently, and which weakness mattered most. They can separate a statistical flaw from a business-use problem. Ask what they did when a model owner disagreed. Be wary of people who only describe running checklists, or who cannot show a finding that changed a decision.

Why it is hard to fill

The title varies between firms, so searching by it misses most of the good people. Classic model validators know the regulatory expectations but often have limited experience with modern machine learning. Machine learning engineers know the techniques but have rarely worked as an independent challenger. The mix of statistics, financial context, privacy and willingness to push back is uncommon. Many candidates are happy in their current bank and need a clear reason to move.

Where to find them

Look in model risk teams at banks and payment firms, where validators already work to formal standards. Banking analytics, credit risk modelling and financial crime analytics teams are strong sources, especially people who have moved into machine learning. Financial ML practitioners who have worked under internal audit or second-line review are also worth approaching. Consultancies that serve regulated finance sometimes hold people with the right mix.

Interview questions for an AI Financial Model Validator

  1. Describe a financial model you validated. What did you test, and which finding mattered most?

A strong answer names specific tests, independent rebuilds and a finding ranked by materiality, with its consequence. Worry if they list generic checks, cannot name a real weakness, or claim nothing significant was ever found.

  2. How do you stay independent when the model owner is senior and disagrees with your finding?

Look for evidence-based escalation, clear documentation and calm persistence, while staying open to being wrong. Worry about candidates who avoid conflict, or who treat every disagreement as a fight to win.

  • Independently validate financial AI models, assumptions and data before and after release
  • Rebuild key results and test performance across segments, stress conditions and edge cases
  • Assess how models behave inside live case-management and payment workflows
  • Write validation reports with ranked weaknesses, limitations and remediation actions
  • Agree fixes with model owners and independently retest them
  • Review privacy and AI risk controls around each model
  • Advise teams early so problems are found before approval

What you will bring

  • Demonstrated model validation or independent challenge of financial models
  • Strong grounding in probability and statistics, shown in past work
  • Experience with machine learning models in banking, payments or financial crime
  • Clear written reports that non-specialists act on
  • Evidence of holding a firm position under pushback
  • Working knowledge of privacy engineering and AI risk management

Nice to have

  • Experience with financial data platforms and case-management systems
  • Exposure to regulatory review of models
