AI Environmental Hazard Analyst
Also called Environmental Risk AI Analyst
An AI Environmental Hazard Analyst combines models and observations to assess floods, fires, storms and similar threats. They give the company hazard calls it can defend, with honest uncertainty and a record of how often they were right.
What they do
They pull together forecasts from several models, satellite and other Earth observation data, and ground measurements. They check where the sources agree and where they do not. They build or tune machine learning and statistical models to fill gaps, correct bias and sharpen local detail. They turn the results into hazard assessments that say how likely an event is, where, and how sure we are. They talk to the people who act on the warnings, then compare what was forecast with what happened and adjust the method.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire sets up a repeatable way to assess one or two priority hazards from several data sources. They produce assessments that state uncertainty clearly. They put verification in place, so false alarms and missed events are counted and reviewed. They also agree with users what a useful warning looks like, and show where the models need to improve.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a past hazard assessment from raw data to decision. Strong people explain why they trusted some sources over others, how they expressed uncertainty, and what they did when the models disagreed. They can describe a miss and what it taught them. Be wary of anyone who talks only about accuracy and never about how the warning was used.
Why it is hard to fill
Hardly anyone holds this title yet. The work usually sits inside meteorology, climate risk, remote sensing or applied ML jobs. Candidates tend to be strong on one side: domain science or machine learning. Few are comfortable with both, and fewer still have worked on decisions where a wrong call has consequences. Job titles rarely tell you who has done it, so we read the work history instead.
Where to find them
Look at forecasting and hazard teams in national weather and environmental services, research institutes and universities. Also look at climate risk and insurance analytics groups, satellite and Earth observation companies, and humanitarian early warning programmes. Typical backgrounds are meteorology, hydrology, climate science, geospatial analysis and scientific machine learning. Some are researchers moving towards operational work, and some are data scientists who picked up the domain.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an AI Environmental Hazard Analyst
- Describe a hazard assessment you built from several model and observation sources. How did you decide what to trust?
A strong answer names the sources, their known biases and gaps, and the checks used to weigh them. It shows judgement rather than averaging. Worry if they treat all sources as equal or cannot say how they validated the choice.
- How do you communicate uncertainty to someone who has to decide whether to act on a warning?
Good answers use plain language, probabilities or scenarios tied to the decision, and test the format with users. They admit trade-offs. Worry if they offer only technical measures such as intervals with no thought for how the reader will use them.

Job description you can post
We are building AI-supported hazard assessment so that our customers can act early on environmental threats. We are looking for an analyst who can bring together models and observations, say clearly how sure we are, and prove our warnings are worth acting on. You will work with scientists, engineers and the people who use our output.
What you will do
- Assess environmental hazards using several forecast models, satellite data and ground observations
- Build and tune statistical and machine learning methods for bias correction and local detail
- Produce hazard assessments that state likelihood, location and uncertainty
- Set up and run verification, including false alarm and missed event rates
- Work with users to shape warnings that support real decisions
- Document methods and data limits so others can review and reuse them
What you will bring
- Shown work assessing a weather, climate or other environmental hazard from multiple sources
- Practical time-series modelling experience on real observational data
- Working skill with geospatial data and Earth observation products
- Clear approach to quantifying and communicating uncertainty
- Experience verifying forecasts or warnings against outcomes
- Ability to explain technical results to non-specialists
Nice to have
- Experience with operational or near-real-time forecasting
- Familiarity with machine learning for downscaling or extremes
- Work with emergency, insurance or infrastructure users of hazard information
