Autonomous Laboratory Portfolio Controller

Also called Autonomous Science Portfolio Controller

A scenario role that depends on how AI develops: this person would coordinate resources and safety limits across automated research networks, so a company gets scientific value without exceeding approved experiment boundaries.

What they do

If automated discovery systems ran experiments across several labs, this person would decide where effort and resources go. They would keep a portfolio of active research programmes and a control plan for each. They would set and check experiment limits, review requests to widen what a system may do, and work with safety and validation teams before instruments are connected. They would stop or pause work when results look unreliable or risk rises. They would report to leadership in plain terms on value, spend and exposure.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire would deliver a clear portfolio of research programmes with agreed priorities. They would set out approved experiment and resource boundaries, and who can change them. They would establish a routine for independent validation and authorisation, a way to escalate concerns, and a regular report that lets leadership see what is running, what it is producing and where the risks sit.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to walk through a time they governed several research efforts at once. A strong candidate explains how they set limits, handled disagreement between scientists and safety staff, and decided what to stop. Ask for a sample control plan. Good answers are specific about evidence, authority and failure. Be wary of people who talk only about speed or only about caution.

Why it is hard to fill

If this role appeared, the people would be scarce because it joins three worlds that rarely overlap: scientific leadership, assurance and laboratory safety. Titles would vary and none would map neatly. Most candidates would be strong in one area and thin in the others. Recruiters would be judging potential and judgement, not matching a familiar job history.

Where to find them

Today the likeliest sources are senior research leaders who have run multi-team programmes, research assurance and quality leads, and laboratory safety or biosafety managers. Some would come from AI governance and assurance teams, and from groups doing frontier scenario analysis. Look in research institutes, automated laboratory operations, regulated science settings and AI companies with serious safety functions.

Interview questions for an Autonomous Laboratory Portfolio Controller

  1. Tell me about a time you set resource or safety limits across several research programmes. How did you decide them?

Strong answers give a real example, name the evidence used, and explain trade-offs between value and risk. They show how limits were agreed and reviewed. Worry if limits were arbitrary, copied from elsewhere, or never revisited.

  2. A system asks to widen its permitted experiments because early results look promising. What do you do?

They should ask for the evidence, involve independent validation, test the risk change and decide who authorises it. A good answer allows a staged yes. Worry about instant approval or reflexive refusal without reasoning.

Job description you can post

We are building a research operation in which automated systems carry out experiments across several laboratories. We need someone to coordinate the portfolio, set the limits within which it runs, and make sure the science we gain stays inside approved boundaries.

What you will do

  • Maintain a portfolio of active automated research programmes and their priorities
  • Write and update control plans for each programme
  • Set and monitor experiment and resource boundaries
  • Review requests to extend what automated systems may do
  • Work with safety, validation and science teams on authorisation
  • Pause or stop work when results or risks require it
  • Report on value, resource use and risk to leadership

What you will bring

  • Demonstrated leadership of multi-team scientific or laboratory work
  • Experience with research assurance, quality or safety governance
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety, including biosafety
  • Evidence of making and defending hard resource decisions
  • Ability to judge the reliability of scientific results
  • Clear writing and communication with scientists and executives

Nice to have

  • Experience with laboratory automation
  • Background in AI governance or assurance
  • Work on scenario analysis for emerging technology

Depends on a scenario

End-to-end automated scientific discovery

What AI would need to do
Systems autonomously formulate, execute and verify novel scientific work across disciplines.
What organisations would need to decide
Labs can safely connect models to instruments with independent validation and authorisation.
What would rule it out
Scientific novelty, reproducibility or safe experiment execution remains unreliable.

We give no date. The role becomes real if both conditions hold.

How we wrote this

Role definitions are our own editorial work, checked against occupational classifications, standards, research and employer pages. Titles vary by company, and this is a description of the work, not a job advert. Scenario roles describe responsibilities that depend on stated conditions; they are not forecasts.
