AI Regulatory Affairs Specialist
Also called AI Compliance Specialist · AI Compliance Manager · AI Regulatory Compliance Lead
An AI Regulatory Affairs Specialist turns legal obligations into a clear plan and a complete evidence package for a defined product. It matters because missed requirements can stall a launch or a sale to a cautious customer.
What they do
They take a defined AI product and work out which rules apply to it. They turn those rules into an obligation matrix with owners, evidence needed and due points. They chase engineers, product managers and legal colleagues for documents, test results and decisions, then check what comes back against the requirement. They draft and assemble submissions, technical files and customer assurance responses. They keep a record of how each judgement was reached. They watch for changes in guidance and tell the team what it means for the product, in plain terms.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire gives the company a single obligation plan for each in-scope product, with named owners and gaps made visible. They build an evidence package that stands up to a regulator or a customer's review. They set up a routine for collecting evidence as the product changes, so submissions stop being a scramble. Leadership gets clear advice on what must be done before launch and what can wait.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a real submission or compliance programme from first read of the rules to final package. Strong people explain how they interpreted unclear wording, what they asked engineers for, and what they left out and why. Ask to see an obligation matrix, with sensitive detail removed. Be wary of anyone who only recites regulations or cannot describe the evidence itself.
Why it is hard to fill
The title varies widely, so searches by title miss good people. The work sits between law, documentation and technical understanding, and few candidates have all three. Many lawyers are strong on interpretation but have never assembled evidence with engineers. Many compliance staff know process but not how AI systems behave. Demand is steady, scarcity is moderate, and the best candidates are often already trusted inside their current employer.
Where to find them
Look at regulatory affairs and compliance teams in regulated technology, such as health technology, financial services and data-heavy software. Technology lawyers, privacy and data protection practitioners, regulatory policy advisers and rights or licensing managers often move across well. Enterprises building internal AI governance and AI vendors answering customer due diligence both employ people doing this work today.

Interview questions for an AI Regulatory Affairs Specialist
- Describe a submission or compliance package you assembled. What was in it and who supplied each part?
A strong answer names the requirements, the evidence types and the contributors, and shows how they chased gaps. Worry if they describe only reading rules, or claim sole credit for work that clearly needed engineering input.
- How do you handle a requirement whose wording is unclear for a specific product?
Good answers cover reading guidance, comparing sources, consulting counsel, documenting the chosen interpretation and its reasoning, and flagging residual risk. Worry about false certainty or an instinct to avoid any decision.
