AI Data Centre Programme Manager
Also called Compute Buildout Lead
An AI Data Centre Programme Manager delivers gigawatt-scale compute sites, covering land, power, cooling and schedule. They turn a company's compute plans into live capacity that training and inference workloads can actually run on.
What they do
They run the build programme from site selection through to energised halls. That means working with utilities on grid connections, with EPC contractors on construction sequencing, and with internal engineers on rack density, cooling design and network topology. They keep a master schedule, track long-lead equipment such as transformers, switchgear and chillers, and chase down the dependencies that slip. They manage cost and risk registers, run weekly reviews with contractors, and escalate early when power or supply dates move. They also decide what to trade off when design, schedule and budget collide.
What a strong hire delivers
In the first months, a strong hire gives leadership a schedule they trust. They map every dependency from grid connection to commissioning, name the three or four risks that could move energisation, and agree clear owners with contractors and utilities. They bring one or more sites to a firm, credible delivery plan, with decisions on design freezes and equipment orders made on time.
How you can tell they are good
Ask them to walk through a large build they ran and where it went wrong. Strong people name the specific constraint, such as a grid delay or a cooling change, and explain what they traded off. Ask how they would sequence power, cooling and network readiness. Be wary of vague talk about stakeholders, or of people who cannot describe the physical systems.
Why it is hard to fill
Very few people have delivered sites at this scale, and the work sits between construction, power and compute. Titles vary widely, so job-title searches miss good people. Many candidates know buildings but not AI load behaviour, or know HPC but not utilities and contractors. Competing offers from labs and hyperscalers are common, so the best are rarely on the market for long.
Where to find them
Look in utilities, large construction and EPC firms, and semiconductor fabs, where multi-year capital programmes with heavy power and cooling are routine. Other sources are data centre developers, hyperscaler facilities teams and frontier lab infrastructure groups. Typical backgrounds are electrical, mechanical, facilities, network or HPC engineering, moving into programme leadership. Power systems specialists with delivery experience are especially useful.
Indicative pay
Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.
Interview questions for an AI Data Centre Programme Manager
- Tell us about the largest build you delivered. What was the critical path and what moved it?
A strong answer names real constraints such as grid timing, equipment lead times or commissioning, and explains the decisions made. They own the slips. Worry if they describe only meetings, give no specifics, or credit everything to the team.
- A utility pushes your energisation date back by a quarter. What do you do in the first week?
Good answers assess the impact on the schedule, check options such as phased energisation or temporary power, brief leadership with choices, and renegotiate with contractors. Worry if they only escalate, or promise to recover the time without a plan.

Job description you can post
We are building large-scale compute capacity to support AI training and inference. We need a programme manager to lead the delivery of gigawatt-scale data centre sites, from land and power through to commissioning. You will work with engineers, utilities and contractors to bring capacity online on schedule.
What you will do
- Own the master schedule for one or more large data centre builds
- Manage relationships with utilities, EPC contractors and equipment suppliers
- Track long-lead equipment and resolve supply risks early
- Coordinate power, cooling and network design with internal engineering teams
- Run cost, risk and change control with clear owners
- Report status and trade-offs to senior leadership
- Lead commissioning and handover into operations
What you will bring
- Delivered large data centre, power or industrial infrastructure programmes end to end
- Working knowledge of electrical distribution, cooling systems and grid connection processes
- Experience managing EPC or major construction contractors
- Able to build and defend a critical path schedule
- Clear written and spoken communication with engineers and executives
- Sound judgement on trade-offs between schedule, cost and design
Nice to have
- Experience with liquid cooling or high-density compute deployments
- Background in utilities, semiconductor fabs or HPC facilities
- Experience running several sites in parallel
