EmergingAI assurance, audit and standards

AI Standards Engineer

Also called AI Conformance Engineer

An AI Standards Engineer turns applicable technical standards into clear implementation criteria and shows the evidence that a system meets them. That lets a company answer customer, regulator and auditor questions with confidence.

What they do

They read the standards that apply to a product and break them into criteria that engineers can build against. They build a requirements mapping, clause by clause, and agree with product and engineering teams which controls meet each one. They design and run conformance tests, including model evaluation where a clause calls for it. They collect evidence in a repository, keep control matrices current and log exceptions with a reason and an owner. They also prepare the company for external audits and answer assessor questions in plain technical language.

What a strong hire delivers

In the first months, a strong hire leaves the company with a mapping of the standards that apply to its main systems, and a clear view of which clauses are covered and which are not. Exceptions are recorded and verified, not assumed. Engineers know what is asked of them. Evidence sits in one place and an auditor can follow it without a guided tour.

How you can tell they are good

Ask them to take one clause from a standard they know and explain how they would turn it into a testable criterion. Then ask what evidence would convince a sceptical auditor. A strong candidate separates what a clause requires from what a team happens to do. They can show a real mapping, explain their exceptions and say plainly where a standard is vague.

Why it is hard to fill

The work is mostly done today under other titles, such as quality manager, technical risk lead or security compliance engineer. Few people have read AI standards closely and also run technical tests. Auditors often lack the engineering depth, while engineers often dislike the paperwork. Candidates rarely search under this title, so we approach by background and not by job name.

Where to find them

Look in audit and assurance teams that have moved into technology, quality management in regulated engineering, and technical risk functions in financial services, health technology and safety-critical software. Security compliance and information security teams are another source. Some sit inside AI governance groups at larger firms, and some at consultancies that prepare clients for certification.

Indicative pay

Not enough published evidence yet to give a fair range for this role, which is common for work this new. We benchmark it for you as part of a search.

Interview questions for an AI Standards Engineer

  1. Tell us about a standard you turned into implementation criteria. How did you decide what each clause required of the team?

A strong answer names the method: reading the clause, defining a testable criterion, agreeing it with engineers and recording the interpretation. Worry if they only describe reading the standard or filling in a checklist without engineering input.

  2. How do you decide which clauses of a standard apply to a particular AI system?

Good answers cover scope, intended use, risk level and deployment context, and show they document the reasoning. Worry about blanket answers such as everything applies, or a habit of skipping clauses because they seem inconvenient.

Job description you can post

We build and deploy AI systems, and customers and regulators increasingly ask us to show how they meet technical standards. We are hiring an AI Standards Engineer to turn those standards into clear criteria for our teams and to produce the evidence that we meet them.

What you will do

  • Identify which standards and clauses apply to our AI systems and record the reasoning
  • Turn clauses into implementation criteria that engineers can build and test against
  • Maintain a requirements mapping and control matrices
  • Design and run conformance tests, including model evaluation where needed
  • Collect and organise conformance evidence in a central repository
  • Record, verify and track exceptions to closure
  • Support external audits and explain technical points to assessors

What you will bring

  • Demonstrated work interpreting technical standards and turning them into practical criteria
  • Experience running audits, assurance reviews, quality management or technical risk work
  • Ability to design repeatable tests and judge the quality of evidence
  • Working understanding of how AI systems are built and evaluated
  • Clear written and spoken technical communication
  • Comfort challenging teams constructively when evidence is missing

Nice to have

  • Experience with AI risk management or governance frameworks
  • Experience in a regulated or safety-critical sector
  • Experience preparing a team for certification or external assessment
